Established in 1951, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) engages with providing services and advice to governments and migrants, with the commitment of addressing complex challenges related to migration and empowering the migrant communities for better living conditions. Sri Lanka became a Member State of IOM in 1990 and IOM established its presence in Sri Lanka in 2002.
According to the 2017 annual statistics of the Sri Lankan Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) approximately 150,000-200,000 individuals migrate annually to various countries for foreign employment. The operation of the foreign employment agencies in Sri Lanka is regulated by the Government and it is mandatory for all foreign employment agencies to be registered with the SLBFE. All the migrant workers departing from Sri Lanka for foreign employment need to be registered with SLBFE prior to their departure and it helps migrants to reach SLBFE for help during an emergency and to have access to other entitlements/ welfare plans.
IOM in Sri Lanka works in close partnership with national and local government institutions, non-governmental agencies, grass-roots, community organizations and the donor community with the vision of promoting humane and orderly migration.
